Growing media are the materials in which plants are grown in professional horticulture — not field soil, but purpose-engineered substrates designed to regulate water, air, and nutrients within a confined root zone. For commercial growers, the choice of growing medium directly determines crop performance, resource efficiency, and production reliability.

What types of growing media do commercial growers use?

Commercial growers use a range of organic and mineral materials, most commonly peat, coir, wood fibre, bark, perlite, and composted materials. These constituents are rarely used alone — professional growing media are typically blended from two or more raw materials, then adjusted with lime and a starter fertiliser to suit specific crops and growing conditions.

Peat remains the most widely used constituent in European professional horticulture, offering consistent structure, reliable water retention, and a stable chemical environment.
