UN Sustainability Development Goals (SDG)

Guided by the UN SGDs, our main target is to improve our net positive impact every year. And not only ours but the impact of the whole value chain. To achieve that we have based our sustainability roadmap and our goals on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) linked with our business. We believe that together with our customers and partners we can have the most impact on these.

Five key SDG’s

In addition to the five key SDGs we are also following other relevant SDGs to ensure an even bigger impact.

SDG 2: Ending hunger, achieving food security and improved nutrition and promoting sustainable agriculture

In a world where less and less arable land is available protected growing in substrates that is not effected by local soil pollution or extreme weather offers a solution for effectively feeding the world. Moreover, growing media are at the foundation of safe and resource efficient growth. In collaboration with our suppliers we optimize the use of water, energy, nutrients and plant protection, while increasing the yield per area. We are for instance, a member of Plant Empowerment a sector initiative that aims to grow more sustainable and energy efficiently.

SDG 12: Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns

Increasing demand for renewable and non-renewable resources puts pressure on virgin supplies and creates more disruptive extraction. Aiming for more circular resource use and ecosystem restoration is needed to fuel the regenerative capacity of nature and society. We are continuously working with our customers to optimize the effectiveness as well as sustainability of our substrates. We also offer circular solutions to optimise the after use. Similarly, we are reducing the weight of our packaging and increasing the recycled content. Instructions and advice that come with our solutions ensure responsible and fit for purpose use.

SDG 13: Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts

Accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere is causing an increase in extreme weather events like longer dry spells and flooding and is damaging ecosystems and livability globally. We need solutions to slow greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to the changes already occurring. Through our Landscaping solutions we are actively contributing to greener urban areas that can store CO2 and provide buffers for extreme weather. Our professional solutions are at the foundation of protected growing that is independent of extreme weather. While our retail solutions promote gardening at home. At the same time we are investing in solar panels on our factories and other renewable energy solutions. For our products we try to limit transport distances and aim for the use of local and circular raw materials in our recipes.

SDG 15: Sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, halt biodiversity loss

Ecosystems are threatened globally through pollution and unsustainable land use. To prevent further damage to a wide range of ecosystems upon whose resources we depend, we need a regenerative approach in everything we do. To create products as sustainable as possible, we make use of life cycle analyses and sustainability assessments to determine the environmental impact of raw materials. We only source raw materials that are environmentally friendly harvested, preferably proven by third party certification, such as FSC and RPP. And through our solutions we contribute to green urban environments and afforestation.

SDG 17: Strengthen the means of implementation and revitalize the global partnership for sustainable development

At Kekkilä-BVB we are at the foundation of growth. We know we can only be successful if we collaborate with the whole value chain. This is the case for successful business initiatives as well as successful sustainability improvements. We are continuously working with our customers to improve the recipes for growing media, fit for purpose for local growing expertise and conditions. Also with suppliers we are innovating for a better world. And finally to close collaboration with our peers, knowledge institutes and governments we make sure our sustainability ambitions align with the possibilities of today and needs of the future.
